Childhood fondness probably adds bonus points. MacNicol was pretty awful, great dragon effects though.

I remember this film traumatized my unsupervised 4 year old mind when I originally saw it on cable tv. It's not good but it is one of the more interesting swords and sorcery flicks that came out during the 80's.

While the special effects are spectacular, the rest of the film doesn't quite live up to them.

Rich is special effects, but its period flavor and imaginativeness are marred by excessive violence that ruins the film for young children.

Some visual effects are very good even it's from 1981. The story how ever is very slow and the audio of the movie shows no imagination or quality.

The dragon only eats virgins? Well then, it seems to me there is a simple solution to your problem. Bow chicky bow bow.

Lord of the Rings may have raised the bar for cinematic fantasy (to a yet-unequaled level), but there's a certain raw joy to these 80s knights, wizards, and dragons flicks that no other decade truly equals. It's my ultimate guilty pleasure genre, even when they're not that great.

great special effects with ok acting, but the movie seems almost hazy and the music is badly mixed, over powering, and intrusively bad, which takes much away from an only satisfactory movie experience.

Really hasn't aged well, not to mention its awful editing, continuity errors, and plot holes. Watch this film without the tint of childhood nostalgia, and there's very little there.

Besides Excalibur, the best of the sword 'n sorcery films that cropped up throughout the 80s. Well made in almost every way, given acting cred by Sir Ralph Richardson's turn as the sorcerer & John Hallam's delightful turn as the villianous captain of the guards. The dragon special effects (not fully seen until the film's final half hour) alone make the film worth watching, pioneering CG creature effects later seen in films like Jurassic Park.
