Summary: In 1844, farmer's daughter Miranda Wells is invited by Nicholas Van Ryn, distant relation, to live in his mansion as companion to his daughter. Arriving in high hopes, Miranda finds the Van Ryns a bit strange. The parents barely know daughter Katrine; Nicholas faces a revolt of his tenant farmers; the servants hint darkly of curses and visitations. And what does Nicholas really do up in his tower room? Without any real drama it inflates faster than a balloon on heroin. Vincent Price carries the film on his shoulders.

Fun little knockoff of Rebecca, but not terribly much ever really happens, so it never gets too involving. Tierney is good as the ingenue ("Golly Moses!") as well as peerlessly lovely, and Price turns in a strong performance too in a most unsympathetic role indeed. Miranda's father is painfully stern and dreary, and the less seen of him the better. It's a good-looking picture, with loads of atmosphere (thanks to the sets/cameraman)...but again, not a lot of goings-on to engage our interest.

An interesting idea for an American Gothic along the lines of Jane Eyre or Rebecca, but unfortunately Mankiewicz--although good at dialoque--doesn't know how to create the required mysterious atmosphere. Vincent Price is very good as the patroon, but Gene Tierney seems somewhat miscast as the naive--though ambitious--country girl.

This is a fantastic movie, I loved it. Price's performance is so fantastic, one of his best in my opinion, his character was so psycho. The story is great, it's dramatic, romantic, suspenseful, and thrilling. A combination of romance and horror that is just brilliant. All the actors were great really, even the little girl. There's a lot going on in the story, but not too much that you don't understand what's going on. it's very suspenseful.
