After a years worth of toil and money, I finally managed to get my hands on this...and was really fucking disappointed. Playing out very much like a 70s slasher, with a satirical real estate twist, "Dream Home" offers up an uneasy balance of serious drama and gore, intertwined with an unlikable protagonist and regular flashbacks. Considering the subject matter, the film takes itself way too seriously and the gore is subpar, even in the pregnant woman and castration scenes. Awful tagline.
Urban housing is a serious problem in Hong Kong, and the way this film looks at it - it's gory as hell too! Looking at the way this film is structured, it's like two completely different types of film are layered one after another over and over again. Part of it is a serious family drama, other part - over the top slasher. Interesting formula, but it doesn't work. Recommended if you are in the mood for stepped on eyeballs.
