Summary: Twenty-five years after bringing Broadway audiences to their feet, the Tony Award-winning musical sensation Dreamgirls comes to the big screen. Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, Dreamgirls follows the rise of a trio of women (Hudson, Knowles and Rose) who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. Jennifer Hudson's performance is so intense it makes me uncomfortable, and I'm not sure that's a good thing. The songs aren't much and the direction often falters.
I wake up completely nude strapped to a bed with brass posts and a urine-stained matress. An old lamp with a flickering lightbulb stands in the corner, but otherwise the room is bare. An obese, janitor-like type comes into the room and introduces himself as Cletus. He strips, positions himself on my chest and proceeds to take a huge, hot dump on my belly, all the while singing Abba tunes. I would rather have that scenario play out than having to watch this movie ever again.
Why is Jamie Foxx in every film about African American history? More of the same story about a talented group that goes through turbulent power struggles and adulterous relationships. I'm tired of musicians and "entertainers" being thrown into semi-serious films just to draw a little more cash. Seriously, I wish Beyonce was unique to the circumstance. There are better actors somewhere out there. I mean scout the high school plays, do what you gotta fucking do, ya know?
I have all the love for black music, and the performances were really good whenever the script was decent enough, sadly the script is nothing new nor any good.
Devoid of any charm, charisma, talent, good music and completely superficial and bland. It's exactly what you don't want in a musical. It's especially terrible when you consider it's a musical about girl groups. You know, from the era in music that gave us stuff like THESE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er8PN385PEA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy8_38U3xLU what a complete let down of a film
The story of the film have been seen a lot a times before. It doesn't even try to avoid the cliché.
I admit Jennifer Hudson can sing. If only she could act, as well.
