Bizarre and unfocused film that tries to be too many things at once -- a coming-of-age film, an age-relations film in the spirit of HAROLD & MAUDE, a fairly toothless critique of fundamentalism -- but by spreading its net too wide, it doesn't capture anything, despite the generally agreeable performances. Does remain strangely watchable however.

Walters gives an interesting performance, though definitely not her best; Grint tries so hard NOT to be Ron Weasley that the poor kid's acting seems sadly suffocated. Still, the part shows that all he needs is a little confidence and serves as a good foundation for (hopefully) a long and versatile career.

A pretty enjoyable directorial debut from Brock, that will probably go a long way to separating Grint from Ron Weasley: there seems to be a surprisingly mature and capable actor under that shell, and hopefully further work will coax it out of him. Walters is side-splittingly brilliant as the batty old Evie Walton, and there are strong performances from Michelle Duncan and Nicholas Farrell too: Linney is somewhat over-the-top as Ben's dictatorial mother, though. Underrated and worth a watch.
