Could of shaved some minutes off and has nothing on Leone's best but there is still some fun to be had here.

One of Sergio Leone's last westerns, starring James Coburn as an Irish terrorist with a dynamite fetish and Rod Steiger as a greedy Mexican bandit who both get mixed up in the Mexican revolution. Plenty of enjoyable western violence, humor and a handful of terrifying large explosions...but it's too long at nearly 3 hours, padded with lengthy (and pointless) flashbacks to Coburn's past in Ireland. Still worth seeing.

Leone's technical proficiency makes up for the pacing and content issues. While it feels a bit saggy it's still a lot of fun.

Leone's staples are all here (great photography & score, awesomely bad lead role, etc.) but Duck, You Sucker is perplexing in a good kind of way. It somehow manages to be Leone's goofiest film, as the action is often hilariously over the top and the plot's premise is somehow more outlandish than his other films, yet some elements lend this to be Leone's most "serious" Western. As our protagonists ride through a bloody revolution, there's a sense that their world is far removed from reality.

Basically states how revolutions are a muddled mess where the poor get screwed over time and time again. Perfect score to an almost flawless film.

Duck, You Sucker is interesting for Leone because it tells the stories of characters caught up in the sweeping events engulfing them rather than the impervious, monumental characters of his other works. As with most Leone movies, Duck, You Sucker is able to get around some potential stumbling blocks with its gorgeous cinematography, methodical pacing, and, of course, another fantastic Ennio Morricone score.

Its unusual for Leone's film to be this mediocre. Plot is very poor (weird flashbacks), and editing is not the best. Acting is decent and music is excellent.

In between all the greatness in Sergio Leone's earlier films, he also showed glimpses of what a clumsy, vulgar or even childish director he can be. In Duck, You Sucker that side of him has clearly taken over. This is an incoherent mess which halfheartedly attempts to be both a light comedy western and a political war epic. It all results in a tedious film with very few memorable elements.

One of Leone's least accessible films 0 with its intentionally muddled take on politics, and it's very morally dubious anti-heroes (one an IRA bomber) - but I absolutely adore it still after a few years of not seeing it. It was a response by the director against political westerns being made at the time, and while it could be seen as very conservative in tone by the end, it is a far more interesting work combining humour, pathos and all the best aspects of his film trademarks.

Surprisingly slow

Duck You Sucker isn't without flaws - it could probably stand to lose 20 minutes without too much trouble, the political aspects of the film are a little forced at times, and the flashbacks are completely pointless - but mostly, it never forgets that it's a movie about people getting shot and shit blowing up, and nobody is better at directing movies about people getting shot and shit blowing up than Sergio Leone. What Coburn/Steiger lack in star power, they make up for in charisma.
