The bizarre, colorful, and crazy assassins featured prior to the main duel itself, wearing grotesque masks, with unorthodox styles, are the most memorable elements of the picture. While the main fight is good, it's nothing spectacular. The main characters and any attempt at story are also bland and forgettable. However, the film's steady diet of quality, unique encounters is greater than the sum of its parts. A very good HK kung fu flick, but "classic" is a bit much.

How does a movie with ninjas rising up from out of the ground end up being overall boring?

Despite its reputation, this is a complete mess, far too erratic in its strangeness and with a simple plot that is garbled. But its still worth watching. Alongside its admirable attempts to show the connections between China and Japan (even if the villains are Japanese), its strangeness is also something to behold. The unexpected amount of gore and dismemberment, and the many bizarre types of ninjas shown on screen - flying ninjas, exploding ninjas etc. - are something unique to this film a

HIlariously awesome ninja mayhem! The final duel is among the best in martial arts cinema (next to Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai III: Duel on Ganryu Island [1956]).

I knew I was watching something special when a giant ninja exploded into 6 smaller ninjas, who then exploded into naked women.

Decent action, zero story. Even for a kung fu movie.

Two words: NINJA MAYHEM. This flick has so much awesome ninja crap, it hurts. There's a giant ninja, exploding ninjas, ninjas who fly on paper kites, Bugs Bunny-style burrowing ninjas, a naked female ninja with a huge net, you name it. It's Japan vs China in a sword swinging, limb hewing, finger ripping extravaganza. A bit talky in the middle, but ninjas more than make up for that.
