Well, I'm only one disc in thus far, but Paul sucks. He's the equivalent of CAPSLOCK!Harry in the 5th book: whiny and emo in an unappealing way. I, for one, do not believe that this punk could be the Kwisatz Haderach (which is sort-of a sexist and repulsive hero concept, but looking beyond that...).

Quite a decent book adaptation, a bit longish. Has a one major flaw- considering it was filmed after Star Wars, they should've done a better job.

Might not have been bad, but it's not Dune. Frustrating to watch if you know the book well. Doesn't feel like Dune, which at least the Lynch movie did.

A soulless adaptation of Frank Herbert's work and fails to touch on the elemental nature of Dune and the existential sci-fi universe of Herbert's mind. The interiors and exteriors of this adaptation are well trodden conventions full of plastic prop like actors reciting lines without any expression on immaculate star trek like sets. Paul Atreides (Newman) is a simpering whiny bore. The only actor who isn't snoozing his way through the production is William Hurt and just barely at that. Terrible.

It manages to present a coherent story (unlike David Lynch's version), but it suffers too much from its TV-movie trappings, especially the uncharismatic actors and flat lighting. While it is faithful to the plot, it fails to invoke the metaphysical mysticism and vivid sense of place that made the novel unforgettable.

An actual adaptation of the book. It would be better if they had got a more charismatic actor to play Maud'ib, but it gives the scope of the classic book.

This movie can be a bit difficult to understand completely so try not to watch it sleepy for your first time. Other than that, it is very well made for a made-for-TV movie.

Personally, I think the series looks incredible given the budget and very much succeeds at creating a compelling, enchanting atmosphere. I haven't read the books, but the screenplay worked for me.

Misinterpretation of Dune throughly. I don't mind bad acting or cheap sets and flashy colors but this miniseries is nowhere near capturing the heart of Dune. Since Lynch botched on Dune big time, I am not sure if the masterpiece is adaptable to cinema. Maybe through a fine filter of a future entrepreneur.

This was a really faithful adaptation that got a low score because of the laughably bad special effects. The actors all made the best of some pretty good material, and William Hurt is always great, but the budget was just not enough to do the story justice.

Much truer to the original novel(s) than Terry Gilliam's masterpiece (I think it is, damnit!), though I'm not sure if it's more entertaining. Special effects allow the film to do more, and truly represent the story. A little depressing that it was relegated to a sci-fi mini-series instead of a full blown series following the entirety of the novels, however. Still worth a watch if you're familiar at all with Herbert's novels.

Excellent adaption of Frank Herbert's science fiction masterpiece Dune. Admittedly some aspects of the series are low budget. You can tell there are painted back drops and some of the CGI is, at best, mediocre. It feels almost like a theatrical rendition of Dune. Most important of all the heart of Dune is in this. Great mini-series.
