Burton's opus. While it's true that it deflates a little once Lugosi dies, that's more to the fact that Landau was incredible in the role rather than any real problem with the film. Ed Wood captures the slick absurdity of 50's Hollywood, with freaks from all corners of life ambling around beneath a thin veneer. It's astounding how good this is, because Burton has never come close since.

Reigning in his own weirdness, Burton makes an affectionate biopic of the notorious B-movie director/writer/producer/actor. Shooting this in black and white was a stroke of genius and adds to the charm of the movie. The cast are excellent with Depp capturing Ed Wood's childlike enthusiasm for movies and Landau doing an amazing and touching job as faded star Bela Lugosi. Ed Wood might not be a person most people are familiar with, but his story here is touching and amusing, though rose tinted.

If anything a few of Landau's scenes were the highlight (notably his film cameos and his attempted suicide and institutionalisation). Depp was his usual self (seeming to rely on others to enhance his role rather than taking a presence himself) and Murray probably shouldn't have been in this as I barely noticed him. The first half was very forgettable and slow, but I guess it picks up a bit and then dwindles again at the end.

Martin Landau was the scene stealer, it seemed more a film about Bela Lugosi's last years more than about Ed Wood.
