Summary: Elias is a young man from a nameless country in the Mediterranean who has tossed away his passport and paid a smuggler a handsome fee to be hidden inside a ship making its way to Europe. When immigration authorities stage a surprise inspection, Elias jumps ship along with a number of other unauthorized passengers, and hours later he washed up on the clothes-optional beach of a luxury resort on the Southern coast of France. More than just a road trip or modern fable, Costa-Gavras has created a genuine social realist Odyssey. Our hero Elias the illegal immigrant is thrust into an epic adventure in a strange land as he stumbles from one unexpected predicament or stroke of good luck to another. Europe becomes a wonderland to the viewer as well, seen in a whole new light. Never decidedly negative nor positive but a colorful and absolutely thrilling mixture of both. Great movie.
