The setup is similar to Rio Bravo. The plots differ enough so that it doesn't feel like a total rehash, but a lot of the beats are the same. It isn't nearly as fun as its predecessor, but it's good enough and anyone would be an improvement over Walter Brennan. It's goddamn shame that Caan was forced to pretend to be Chinese in one of the ugliest stereotypes I've ever seen. Otherwise I enjoyed the movie but I wouldn't place it far above the average Western.

Solid fun western. Even if it is a bit of a rehash of Rio Bravo it's still enjoyable.

Wayne and Mitchum work well together and on its own two feet this is a good movie. Hanks in his remake of "Rio Bravo" has once again told his story well.

the only john wayne western i like ~ and it's a great one!

Pure enjoyment -- it's great to see Wayne and Mitchum play off each other, although this is genre fare that doesn't break any new ground.

Hawks, the master story-teller, narrates a complex tale so efficiently that he has plenty of time to develop solid characters with deep human relationships, and then reflect on the ethics of the professional and the duties of a friend--all with a light touch, an abundance of humor and plenty of action. Possibly the best Western ever made.
