Summary: 2010. Nascimento faces a new enemy: the militias. In clashing with the system that dominates the Rio de Janeiro, he discovers that the problem is much bigger than he thought. And not only that. He needs to balance the challenge of pacifying a city occupied by crime with the constant concern for a teenager. When the universes of the personal and professional meet, the result is explosive. (entretenimento.r7.com)
Not as good as the first one in terms of depth but still a very good movie with a great pace. I like the main actor (Wagner Moura) and Matias (André Ramiro).
Possibly better than the first installment. I found myself wondering the entire time, how based in reality the film could possibly be. And I promised myself to learn a bit more about the police and favelas of Rio. A promise which I almost definitely won't keep.
"It's Moura's spotless embodiment of the principled Brazilian man for whom aggression and being coincide that renders the film such an immersive experience." - Diego COsta
polis-mafya, siyaset, uyusturucu ceteleri, hapishane (sehir uyusturucudan temizlenir ama bu kez yozlasmis polisler sehre hakim olur. Mükemmel bir film)
By turning Nascimento into a hero, Elite Squad 2's politics become even more muddled, damning the violent system, while lauding the violence. Luckily, the plot is smart, and the movie moves along at an efficient pace, never getting bogged down in its subplots.
my grade reflects my ambivalence towards this movie: I consider it fairly well made, in a visceral-action-movie kind of way, and the actors are all decent etc. the narrative is very compelling, and that is the main problem: apart from the fact that it recalls elite squad 1, which I just rewatched yesterday and, once again, made me feel awful and sad (not in a good, "this movie is a good sad movie", way), the way the narrative is constructed is very questionable. worth a discussion, though.
How did they do it..? It's even better than part 1.... simply amazing. The movie had me sitting on the edge of my chair! What a climax! This is an instant classic!
Remarkably successful attempt at portraying the extreme complexities of the situation while at the same time maintaining a meaningful story. Attempting social critique in the guise of a genre film has been done before, but very rarely this well. Even serves as an Iraq War metaphor...and all in the form of a sequel, too. The all-time ticket sales and box office record-holder in Brazil is an intellectual and sociological essay! Both his features and documentaries make Padilha a great director.
Addresses some really large-scale problems, but still manages to demonstrate the issues on a personal level. It's rare to see an action movie like this, where you not only care about what happens during the action scenes, but they are (somewhat) unpredictable. And at some point, you might end up wishing there wasn't so much shooting, not because of how cliche and repetitive it is, but because something awful could happen.
Sometimes a bit fast to follow with the subtitles, but it was a very suspenseful criminal action drama featuring a former BOPE leader who tries to uncover corruption as drug gangs are replaced by police gangs. If you still think your government is corruption-free after seeing this movie, think again.
I've heard people mention *Godfather*, the TV show *The Wire*, among others. Uh, no. Imo, this feels more like a mediocre TV movie--the acting, writing, action and overall film just seems mediocre. The film isn't terrible, but it's not that great, either. (probable score: 72)
Overall Enjoyment: 30/40, Plot/Themes: 15/20, Cinematography/Direction: 15/20, Acting/Writing: 15/20 Similar to the first film, and just as good, if not better. Fast paced with an interesting political story.
I never saw the first one, but the title makes it sound like a cheesy action flick. Far from it, this movie deals with the problem of pervasive corruption. The story accurately depicts the law of unintended consequences -- a concept all too familiar to anybody who studies drug and/or corruption control policy
Ofttimes a bigger budget can ruin a sequel, but that's not the case here. Sure, this movie features a bit less BOPA than the first installment, but it provides us with us an even deeper view into the workings of the grimy underworld that Elite Squad simply gave us a glimpse of.
Reminded me a lot of The Wire. Great story, great action and great acting. A good insight in the cruel world of the favela's and the corrupt police agents. Perfect mix between action, story and character development so don't expect to watch a shooter movie. Captain Nascimento was great.
