I can't get a bead on Ralph Nelson - what an odd career. This is a interesting throwback to '30s Universal horror. Nice sense of dread and a fantastic opening.

I found myself engrossed and surprised by intelligent dialog and ideas, but unable to see past the stupid way it was shot.

An unusual sci-fi premise does not get the inspired treatment it merits. Carrera is scary as the experiment gone awry.

Fred Koenekamp's slick inky photography is the one element in the correct key for this Thirties-style sci-fi story. On the way to an appallingly messy ending, the movie shows not the slightest interest in its own premise. Rather than hypothesize on the intellectual, emotional, and moral growth of a test-tube Galatea, the movie falls back on experimental mishaps to account for her superhuman learning capacity, her drug dependency, and her homicidal urges.

Sick, but in a good way. Not a classic, but it's fun to see an all-star cast in such a depraved film
