So there's these railguns right and Arnold works alone okay but he has to recruit Italian gangsters to fight the C.I.A. because the U.S. government... wouldn't buy the railguns (what?) so the Russians and an alligator want in and this is all tough for Arnold's character because he works alone and he's very vocal about that so it kills him to ask some chubby goombah to help him out but the bad guy is James Caan so it makes sense to have him whacked by the mafia - spoilers - and there's railguns.

Really a case of it is what it is: Arnie blowing shit up real good - the movie works best when it leans into that philosophy (providing him with a CGI heavy, but undeniably effective airborne action scene which ranks with his best). Falters when it dabbles in tech-heavy conspiracy stuff (Cromwell's "one scene wonder" is a strange addition), and arguably dissipates some tension by revealing the baddie too early (and deflating some of the effectiveness of the baddie's performance). Still good fun.

This movie is weird to me because while it has some amazing individual scenes of peak Arnold it's also holistically a lot weaker than most of his filmography. Doesn't have nearly as much bombastic and funny one-liners as Commando, lacks the cool premise and solid pacing of Total Recall, nowhere near as much character as Terminator, etc. This is Arnold at his most blandest. But Arnold is not a bland man, and even in bland roles he can still be at least mildly entertaining.

This generic forgettable action flick manages to keep its fun factor on for the majority of its duration, albeit only marginally above a passable level. The set piece with the airplane is very Bond-esque over-the-top, which makes for an unexpected highlight of the film. A few one-lines, a trio of Italian mafia and a couple of other action sequences make for a watchable and entertaining-enough nineties action ride. Chances are I will have forgotten it by tomorrow.

Viewed January 19, 2022. I’d guess that Eraser’s mixture of broad action and even broader comedy was an attempt to replicate the success of True Lies. This doesn’t quite pull it off, but the images endure — at one point, Arnold fights an alligator, and there’s a long and honestly pretty awesome skydiving scene that borders on slapstick — and the left-field addition of a heavily stereotypical mobster character in the film’s second half is admirably weird.

John Kruger(Arnold)is a US Marshal trained for the witness protection program, here specializing in erasing people's identities by faking deaths so that they can start fresh after testifying against dangerous criminals. And he's the best guy in the game So when Lee Cullen (Vanessa Williams) duplicates incriminating files against her defense company for the FBI revealing the black market sales of hi-tech weaponry she quickly and unexpectedly finds herself under Kruger's watchful eye.

Generic and predictable Arnie flick arrived at the tail end of his superstar period, just before Batman and Robin led to his downfall. By 1996 he had exhausted his screen persona, and Eraser makes no attempt to break the formula. He plays a wise cracking tough guy who must kill the bad guys and protect a witness played by Williams, a beautiful bore. Aside from a ridiculous scene with CGI crocodiles, Eraser is just an overblown collection of stale warmed over cliches reheated repeatedly.

Eraser was the beginning of the end of Arnold Schwarzenegger's action hero glory days. Potentially it could of been a decent action flick, but a stupidly contrived plot and awful CG do the film no justice. James Caan gives a reasonable performance but Vanessa Williams is an annoyingly poor actress. The set pieces are beyond ridiculous but thoroughly enjoyable none the less. Ultimately it does what it says on the tin and Arnold does what he does best. Blows stuff up. And not much else matters.

Cromwell turned up for his part, the rest falls in the plothole-schlock category in a roller-coaster of audience-engagement. The parachute sequence is a highlight, on another level, so are the several scene's in which Arnold extends his acting range into attempting tenderness.

When I rate a film 75 and higher it usually means it's worth watching, not lower than 65 means it's watchable. This pretty much illustrates what I think about the film, it's a stereotypical kinda film, a few nice action scenes, a couple of good Schwarzenegger punchlines, convincing character but cheesy story line. Not top notch entertainment, I'd advice other action movies, leave this one be.

Rewatched. Considered a throwback to 80's action flicks when it came out - eschews the irony of True Lies and Last Action Hero in favor of old-fashioned straight-faced action absurdity - Arnold's "I work alone" for the US Marshals Service is too funny. Nowhere near perfect, but has plenty of scenes, both exciting and funny, that got me through the goofy plot. Pastorelli looks to be having the time of his life - he, Williams, and Arnold make for an engaging watch.

It's fine? It's predictable and uninspired, sure, and the electric guitar on the soundtrack is amusingly dated, and at one point someone tries to fly into Arnold with a big jet, but I'm not sure there's anything that wrong with it. The performances are good enough, the stunts functional, the direction competent. It doesn't do anything that wrong, it doesn't do anything that right, it's merely okay. It is, without question, a movie you can watch.

.... apparently you just cannot kill Arnie with an X-ray sighted rail gun firing eclectromagnetic pulses, but it seems to deal with bad guys extremely effectively ... it should be renamed the "Off the rails" gun. This film is ludicrous from start to finish. Predictable, Corny, Stupid, and really, not THAT much fun to make up for it. With such a potentially decent cast, I am not sure how Chuck Russell made such a dogs dinner of this.

"Unmemorable" should never be a word used to describe an Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle, but ERASER comes perilously close to it. The star's charisma is still there, but the film uses it in strange ways, saddling him with generic adversaries and more-annoying-than-helpful allies. The lone exception is chief baddie James Caan, whose unapologetically disdainful tone is most appropriate for the material. And while EMP railguns are cool in theory, they're not nearly as impressive in practice.
