One of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell's best. A movie that, like Blade Runner and The Road Warrior before it, established an atmosphere and aesthetic that has been ripe source material for numerous clones and rip-offs, and rightly so.

Suspenseful . . . and amusing too. Kurt Russell is very funny, and Ernest Borgnine is good as the last cabby left in NYC.

The possibility of freedom dominates the mindset of both Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken and Isaac Hayes' Duke in John Carpenter's excellent but simple-in-nature action flick, though they (and - by extension - the filmmaker) don't let that inspire conformity. Thus, the film qualifies quite ably a work of thematic and literal subversion - rewarding in entertainment even when it suffers slightly from a simple nature.

A ridiculous premise has Kurt Russell descending deeper through an apocalyptic wasteland. I wasn't expecting anything but a fun bit of campy action/adventure, so I'm not sure why I didn't get a kick out of this. The lame acting, dated synth music, and clunky pacing really threw me off.

9/11 never forget.

Probably the coolest dorky film ever; I just wish it were longer. The world Carpenter created is perfect (well for the movie), and Russell's eyepatch is awesome. "Escape From New York" is definitely a fun watch.

Subversive Fun. Kurt Russel is very entertaining to watch. Good dystopian atmosphere. I enjoy how it sets up action movie cliches, then reverses them (ie having Russel meet a beautiful and mysterious women in an abandoned building, clearly setting up a romantic subplot... only for her to die a second later when Russel abandons her to clamoring hobos). Every Carpenter/Russel collaboration is a hit; this one no exception.

There's something really cool about the 80s sci-fi actioners. A gritty quality, largely due to the rough editing and the syntheziser sound design. So, it's a simple setup, with some pretty cool characters (Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York!). But the best part is how New York is transformed into the end stage of Travis Buckle's psychosis. Little things like a short stint in a theatre, where a few criminals are trying to maintain some sort of culture - and Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York!

More focus on the dystopian aspect would of been appreciated. For what it is, it manages to be a fairly entertaining B grade action flick.

Snake Plissken don't care about nothing and nobody. and he's hard as nails. Also, Isaac 'Chef' Hayes and Donald Pleasence! Couldn't ask for more
