Eye-opening, fact-based WW2 Holocaust drama, from Solomon Perel's autobiography, is both harrowing and humorous; deftly blends horrific images with black comedy to depict the growing pains of a boy becoming a man in the midst of a world in chaos. Holland has made a riveting and moving film.

This was a staple in my German class in high school. The best part is the teacher would fast forward through the one sex scene. The high-speed humping was a cross between hilarious and violent, perhaps leaving a much less delible mark in our minds than just letting the scene play out as is. Good film though.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Pretty good (true) story, but I wanted more about the emotional effects of denying who you are, the shame that Perel either felt or didn't feel. That was mostly represented in a couple of very lame dream sequences, while the rest of the movie was a mere retelling of events without much emotional context. I was engaged, but not impressed.

I think this might have been the first film to start the whole double of the same word craze.

I didn't find the the actor who played Solly that good. The telling of the story wasn't good either. Overall the movie was ok, but it wasn't the best holocaust/ww2 movie out there.
