Pretty much a recap of the first seven or so episodes of the original TV series, I thought this was a step back as Shinji, Misato, and Rei didn't feel quite as well defined as before. The art is noticeably improved, however, and Shinji is less angsty than before. Could easily be seen as an improvement, I'm sure but it just didn't feel "right" to me.
Like the TV series, only with more explosions and less exposition. Considering the series the series was already a rather confusing mixture of allegorical allusions and badly paced action that's not an improvement.
Well for one thing the premise is a lie. No Anno, this was not to create new fans but to bolster your wallet from old ones. In and of itself what is there to say? If anything, I imagine the wonky CGI visuals will degrade long after the original series retains its charm. But I'm going to feel a lot less generous if it was all for nothing.
This is a rebuild of and awesome series to the way it should have been done. This isntallation gives you the base and begin to delve slightly into what is one of the most indepth examinations of the "human condition" that has ever been released on media.
Hard to rank because it's so close to the series - which is still one of the best existentialist dramas of the 20th century - so I can't tell how it flows being I've practically memorized the first incarnation (but it seems well-distilled). And for a kaiju-insprired religio-punk mecha about Armageddon with hyper-Freudian existentialism, well, it more than accomplishes its aims.
I like Eva more than my score on this re-take. I don't know what's missing, maybe the years past after first time I watched the series, maybe the cut-to-the-chase action packed attitude of this feature length. I'll be waiting till all 4 movies comes together.
Though the first six episodes of Evangelion were the weakest, this movie improved upon them by drastically improving the animation and overall production quality. Plus, the twist at the end makes you believe it's something more than just a remake...
I feel torn about this first installment; on the one hand the sense of doom 'n gloom is strong, the Angels are threatening in interesting ways and the action is fluid and large in scale. On the other hand it failed to engage me on any emotional level; most characters are distant and cold, and more time is spent on deployment scenes than human interaction. I was surprised at how little I was enjoying watching this.
Thank goodness that in the vein of so many other anime series that are being revamped, Eva made it through. The animation and music quality are vastly improved, the v/as are remastered, and there's little fault to be found with this retelling.
