I hate movies about guys who drink all day, but then can act completely sober whenever the plot calls for it. This wasn't a comedy or a drama. It was sad, but only in how boring it was.

It tries and mildly succeeds, imparting its well meaning but simplistic message with decent laughs and acceptable performances. It never manages to get beyond that, though, trapped by a nonsensical setup and an unwillingness to let real drama seep into the comedy beyond a couple of big scenes.

Not a bad movie just extremely slow moving. Would have been better as a short film. Farrell however really makes this movie. Otherwise the cast is just okay.

Ferrell is great in perhaps his most subtle role yet. The premise is compelling, though possibly better suited to a short film, as it feels like it spreads itself a little thin.

Starts off with a good concept, which has scope to be taken in almost any direction; unfortunately the direction chosen is a bit too serious and introspective. I was left wanting a bit more craziness, anger or passion from the character. A bit more "fight the system" or "fight your demons" rather than instant submission. The victimised kid was cute but none of the other characters added anything. A perfectly watchable film but disappointing in its lack of ambition or creative vision.

Ferrell's Nick basically goes around drinking beer, still trying to believe that he can take his old life back -- his wife, at least. And the movie, a (too) good-hearted post-recession dramedy, slowly builds his new life in a catatonic narrative, not always appealing, but sharp enough to make you like him -- and maybe find something good in this yard mess he's trapped in. And, I have to say: Laura Dern is just gorgeous and I loved that ending with I shall be released by The Band.

A low key experience. Ferrell is pretty good, and shows some of the skill he displayed in the super "Stanger Than Fiction". This movie does little new or exciting, and every so often wanders into the realms of the cliche, but it does have a really nice feel and ethos about it. A good watch.

Will Ferrell is wonderful as an alcoholic loser living on his own lawn, playing this difficult part with dignity and restraint as well as great humor. Unfortunately, the screenplay wobbles a lot trying to flesh out the brief Raymond Carver story that inspired it, not sure whether it wants to be indie-slice-of-life or plot-driven-heartwarming. Laura Dern is very fine in her brief appearance.

Understated but deeply touching drama is anchored and grounded by a extraordinary dramatic performance from Ferrell, who perfectly humanises his potentially obnoxious character and makes him not only relatable but immensely likable. Even without the Ferrell baggage, it is a remarkable effort. The supporting cast (including a wonderful cameo from Dern) are equally fine and an insightful screenplay succeeds in developing the premise in unexpected ways. A real treat.

'Everything Must Go' doesn't contain a complete personal overhaul that you'd expect from the title. The characters change, but only a little bit. Nick is a total ass. By the end of the film, he's slightly less of an ass. Subtlety is part of its charm. Still, it has the necessary indie moment, containing a strange sex act that is far from subtle and otherwise a macguffin. Otherwise, people get upset and don't forget it. Not one character is perfect, nor are they ready to change, but do a bit.

For all of its soft lighting this film has remarkably little to say, I feel like its presentation is an illusion, a shallow pool made to seem deep. The little piece of story that is presented doesn't lend the film nearly as much meaning as it is attempting to borrow, and while I can respect that this film is about a situation with no easy answers I would have greatly appreciated a more interesting question.

Much like the short story it's based on, Everything Must Go takes a quiet, bitterly ironic tone toward its narrative, which itself makes some subtle, wise observations about the human experience...whatever that is. Point being, the characters feel real and their progress, however slight, feels justly earned--an increasingly rare feat in the overcrowded indie-dramedy landscape. Plus, its sporadic use of humor that's actually funny keeps it from getting weighed down by its themes.

It's relentlessly depressing because of the circumstances that Ferrell's character is thrown into, and also because the film doesn't end with any unquestionable sign of hope for any of the characters involved, nor offers a resounding message. The humor is sporadic and muted; just because Ferrell is the lead doesn't make this a Comedy.

Will Ferrell shows he can be more then just an obnoxious idiot. This is his "Punch-Drunk Love". Not a whole lot even happens in this movie, but it's interesting to watch. I don't really have much else to say except, this is Will Ferrell's movie. He is really the only reason to watch it, which is a good reason.

Ferrell isn't bad and he should seriously consider branching into dramatic territories but the movie around him is dull and cliched and offers very little insight.

Another indie dramadie, and another with Will Ferrell in the lead. To be honest though, without Ferrell in the lead I probably would not have enjoyed this movie as much as I did. He is perfect at playing a subdued character and shines as the lead role here. The movie is slow and it does drag on but it's good for a small ride.
