Some genuine suspense, lots of red herrings, and a silly resolution add up to an OK thriller but Dunaway's kinky colleagues and their lifestyles are a real turnoff.

If Mommie Dearest was Dunaway setting fire to herself, then Eyes of Laura Mars was her dousing herself with petrol. It should have worked. The cast is very good and John Carpenter co-wrote it, but somehow it ends up feeling like something DePalma could have made if he decided to emulate Argento instead of Hitchcock, without fully abandonding the latter or comitting to the former. And also, you know... if DePalma was a worse director than he already is.
