This movie lacks an element to drive the plot (plot?) forward... just a bunch of insecure fucking teenagers dancing in tank tops. Pointless and annoying.

I don't get criticisms calling this film "cheesy". It never feels inauthentic or false. Yes, the characters may not feel fully fleshed out, but there's a large ensemble here & they've got 4 years of changing to cover. If stories lack a satisfying closure, isn't that honest? Teen lives usually feel melodramatic & this never hides from the problems these kinds of teens would face, while noting that life goes on. I see a heavy dose of reality thrown in here, as well as great songs front to back.

Despite feeling way too compressed for how many characters it follows over 4 years of high school, the editing keeps everything flowing smoothly and all the stories clear and effective. There are some nice, if a bit trite, lessons throughout the film, but mostly it's a fun ride with more laughs than I expected.

Alright, I like that it was a movie in 1980 that dealt with a lot of issues that I wouldn't expect from it. But I felt like the second half was about four people only, and they seemed to just ignore/forget about some plot lines. So that was disappointing.

A bit of a mess, but an interesting time capsule nevertheless with some high points here and there.

Not the right version of cheesy.

There is one cool scene in the middle of the movie. The rest of it is not only poorly paced, but features some of the most uninteresting subject matter someone has ever attempted to film.

It's a classic and not a typical one. It's very entertaining. It shows the life of students in drama and musicalschool, life as it is anno 1980. I liked it but there was too little follow-up of the characters. And oh yeah there is a straight gay guy.

A lot of people love this flick, and I'm usually up for a good musical, but I couldn't stand it

It really does have some excellent moments, but gets weighed down with incredible cheese and teenage melodrama.

The loudest movie I've ever watched. I had this on the level 6 volume (usually watch movies around 80) and it still hurt my ears.

Not the cheesy musical I was expecting. The movie feels so real with all the people and different personalities, so jam pack of life, sweat and the grittiness of that era of New York. Has unresolve plotlines that bother me though

Today everybody wants to be a star. This addresses that contemporary dream in a most charming and lively fashion.

Very deep and complex story, and Irene Cara is (forgive the cliche) a force of nature in this film. However, the narrative has a lot of holes, and it's really frustrating that the film ends abruptly without much closure.

Other than the fact that it kicked of a long-running television series (the kids 3 years of high school took 5 years on TV), one of the strongest points of interest for this film is how it really straddles two decades. It has a gritty, street 1970's vibe with a very glossy 1980's sheen.

Well edited and the first act is substantial and worthwhile. Sadly, it gets increasingly cheesy as it progresses.

Exciting in spite of some nasty plot contrivances. Unabashedly dedicated to virtues of toil, talent, and upward mobility. Did these kids suffer this much in grade school?
