Summary: Follows a group of high school students growing up in southern California, based on the real-life adventures chronicled by Cameron Crowe. Stacy Hamilton and Mark Ratner are looking for a love interest, and are helped along by their older classmates, Linda Barrett and Mike Damone, respectively. The center of the film is held by Jeff Spicoli, a perpetually stoned surfer dude who faces off with the resolute Mr. Hand, who is convinced that everyone is on dope. (imdb)

As a teen movie in the early 80s, the nudity and dialogue about sex must have rocked everyone's world at the time. Now, after a slew of American Pie-like teen comedies, Fast Times shows its age: it's tame, and unfunny. The only brilliant qualities of the film are Sean Penn and the 5-minute take on abortion (basically: "Uh oh, I'm pregnant. Guess I gotta get an abortion. ... Great, I'm done. Just don't tell my parents.")

Convinced that 'The Breakfast Club' was the best teen movie of the 80s (the kids in 'Stand by Me' were younger, right?), this came as a great surprise to me. I wonder if Crowe made cliffnotes in his favorite script of mine for musical cues. Together with Heckerling he completely nails high school in a way I have seldomly seen onscreen (Linklater's 'Dazed and Confused' deserves mention) and their ensemble cast act out situation upon situation which are both familiar and fresh. Absolutely amazing.

For the most part boring as hell and kind of disturbing in places. Phoebe Cates has great tits though and Spicoli is a classic stoner archetype that's been copied endlessly since this movie came out. What the hell happened to THIS Sean Penn?
