What the hell did I just watch? To be honest, I'm not sure what to think about it. Let's call it unique. And an experience. But for every enchanting close-up or picturesque landscape there are many demented and disgusting scenes. Zeiler was quite good as Faust, I thought, but overall, I can't really recommend the film.

Haunting. Unforgettable. Incomprehensible. Wildly surreal. Sokurov skillfully uses the whole palette of filmmaking to expressionistically submerge us in the world of a man losing his soul, perhaps slowly losing his mind in the process, and heading straight to hell.
