Summary: A romantic comedy about a man, a woman and a football team. Based on Nick Hornby's best selling autobiographical novel, Fever Pitch. English teacher Paul Ashworth (Colin Firth) believes his long standing obsession with Arsenal serves him well. But then he meets Sarah. Their relationship develops in tandem with Arsenal's roller coaster fortunes in the football league, both leading to a nail biting climax. (imdb)
I don't feel like it captured the true essence of why people love football (or any sports team really) as well as the book did. Instead it focuses on the relationship which didn't flow well, and often felt completely random. I guess there's something to be said for realism in how random real relationships are as well. It's just we get to experience all the moments of those and not just intermittent parts.
It gets a nice balance between romance and football, and there are a lot of laughs to be had along the way. More than that, though, it's a film that seems to be inhabited by real people -- stupid, flawed, blind, funny, but perfectly believable characters -- and it's thanks to this that Fever Pitch is such an enjoyable watch.
It's not bad and has some decent moments - teaching school kids to appeal for offside in unison - but frankly the main character is still an idiot and Arsenal winning the title (however dramatically) leaves me cold. Sorry Gooners.
A really stupid movie. I hate the whole "Red Sox Yankees" feud, because 90% of the people involved just pick a team to fit in socially and don't care. The other 10% are freakishly serious about a bunch of guys who make 20 million dollars to hit a ball with a stick.
