Andrew and Vicky McGee met while earning money as guinea pigs for an experiment at college. The experiment was shrouded in suspicion and mystery, and seemed to be related to psychic abilities. The two were married and had a daughter Charile, who has the ability to start fires by merely thinking about it. Naturally, the government takes a great interest in Charlie, and operatives from the secret department known as "The Shop" want to quarrantine and study her. (imdb)

I really enjoyed this Granted the film is really dated and the plot is pretty implausible But still good for it's time

I haven't read the book, but there definitely echoes of The Dead Zone and Carrie in here. This was entertaining enough, but there isn't much on show to suggest that Lester would knock out the peerless masterpiece Commando the following year. I though Barrymore did well, and the lunatic turns from Sheen and Scott added colour. I can't remember seeing Fletcher in this, but it was after midnight and I'd had a drink. Freddie Jones is cool. I might check the book out.

I thought Barrymore and Keith did a pretty good job. Not the strongest King book but this translates pretty well comparatively.

I saw the low 14a rating and exhaled with disappointment, there was going to be no vagina garbage disposal.

Underrated, I feel. Barrymore is very good in it, and she can freaking set stuff on fire and shoot fireballs with her mind. Like John T. once said: "Ain't it cool?"

It's watchable, but one of the biggest "waste of potential" King adaptations. Also obviously a major inspiration for Stranger Things.

The acting in this 80's horror flick was much worser than previous I saw lately (Cat's Eye). The story kind of work somehow till the half of the movie, but the latter part was pure pain. The story and pacing was lost for good.

Very faithful to the Stephen King novel, yet nowhere nearly as good

Disappointing. Barrymore, Keith, and Sheen give strong performances, and there are some good scenes of fiery carnage. Unfortunately, the story moves along at a plodding pace, while simultaneously dumbing down or completely ignoring most of the characters' motivations from the book. It starts and ends strong, but there's a lot of boring dead air in the middle that kind of ruins the experience.

Most of the movie is very dull. It's disappointing because the cast is stellar, there's just not a ton for them to do with the material.

A decent cheesy time with a surprisingly good cast that helps juice the material just a little.

It wasn't one of my favorite King books and it wasn't a very good movie either. All the characters were extremely shallow and that's funny considering King's best asset as an author is character development. Rainbird, who was very well written in the novel, is a pretty intricate character who has odd motivations but you don't understand them at all in the movie and he just seems useless. Barrymore was just plain annoying. You're better off watching a different King adaptation.

Such a weird blockbuster in so many ways. I like its scattered narrative -- nothing much happens, then a lot happens, flashbacks and so --, because half of it is a road movie of dad and little girl running away from The Shop. The other is a bunch of mind games operated by C. Scott's creepy former Vietnam soldier -- Sheen's character calls him 'exterminator' -- as we wait for Charlie to show her powers to the government dudes. Then, she shoots fireballs on them and goes to NYT. Great climax.

One of the squillions of Steven King adaptations, but not a great one. I suspewct the source material may be a bit crap too

(Disclaimer: This is an admittedly biased review, because Firestarter is one of my favorite King books) No, it's not on the same level as some of the best King adaptations (The Shining, Carrie, Misery), but it's firmly in the second tier for me with films like Christine/Pet Sematary/Cujo. There's plenty of cornball dialogue and a shitty 80s score, but the relationship between the two main characters is convincing enough, and the supporting cast (C.Scott and Sheen mostly) are damn good.

This film has a good and interesting cast but unfortunately the bad script wastes them. There are a number of boring moments in this film. The final action filled scenes do not make up for the rest of the movie. Overall this film is disappointing.

Crap film, but Barrymore turns in a pretty good performance. With this and E.T., she acted better as a child. Weird...

Finally saw this one on a lark as it was on tv. Fun to see a young Barrymore. Scanners vibe with all the telepathic control elements. Solid cast as well. A lot of dated effects and some awfully silly character choices, but it is essentially a cheesy B 80s horror movie. 6.3

Carrie with fire. Firestarter is a very entertaining flick. Encompassing all of King's style for better or worse. Drew Barrymore draws us in right away and shows once again why she is still a celebrated performer to this day.
