Summary: June, 1942. The British Army, retreating ahead of victorious Rommel, leaves a lone survivor on the Egyptian border--Corporal John Bramble, who finds refuge at a remote desert hotel...soon to be German HQ. miserable effort by wilder who seems to have not been directing this one at all, nevertheless the script was competent enough to carry it through some mediocre acting and lackluster camerawork, hell it even made up somewhat for wilder's directing blunders. the one terrible thing is the ending, which is simply atrocious--so it ends up being a sub par watch.

Not particularly bad, just one of Wilder's lesser pictures. It's a little less clever, less intense, and light on directorial flair. Even so it's a decent way to pass the time, and I always enjoy seeing von Stroheim act.

ugh one of the worst endings ever concieved - pure propaganda of the worst kind. The cinematography is the clear stand-out amidst this tired cast/script. Not nearly enough.

Script manages to incorporate wit and humor into genuinely exciting wartime yarn.

A rare thing--a witty war film Von Stroheim is wonderful. Unfortunately, the whole thing is marred by some heavy-handed propaganda and an unsatisfactory ending.

Well it's Wilder, so you know it'll be an effortless watch. A few performances resonate, and the comic relief bits aren't as obnoxious as they could've been, but it's hampered by a dissatisfying conclusion and some tacked-on pro-war propaganda.

Billy Wilder scores again. Groovy WW2 adventure movie. Erich von Stroheim is perfect as Rommel
