Interesting but underwhelming ensemble drama about three rescue pilots carrying out a mission in the Pacific. Much of the film is taken up with the pilots' respective backstories, including Richard Widmark's tragic story of loss in a Japanese prison camp and Yul Brynner's tragic story of loss in wartime Algeria. Had the stories been fleshed out to a greater extent, it might have worked, but despite solid acting, it's a curio at best. Notable as one of George Chakiris' few post-Oscar roles.
