'Foxcatcher' is a painful exhibition of what movies should be: A powerful story tinted through the mind of a talented director, resulting in a work of art much greater than the sum of its parts. It felt like a jolt of defibrillation through that husk the movie format has become. Miller understands shadows, he understands pauses. He trusts the acting and dialogue, that breathes throughout the film like vintage wine. I don't think I have another superhero movie in me after having experienced this.

Slow. Quiet. Cold. Devastating. It's about the toxic, tragic bastardization of the American dream--these characters all dream big but are ultimately too flawed (by money, by lack of imagination, by lack of talent) to get that place on the Wheaties box and achieve that level of heroism that they all crave so desperately. Carell, Tatum and Ruffalo are sensational, haunting, even hypnotic, even as the world around their characters grows ever more pathetic.

Almost too subtle for its own good in terms of how it hints at the relationship between du Pont and Mark. It is a curious story told so dispassionately and clinically that any kind of real resonance filters away. It's best when it focuses on what it means to be isolated and lonely. As good as the performances are, it's only Ruffalo's Dave who feels lived in and natural. Maybe that's intentional because du Pont and Mark are so uncomfortable in their own skin. The whole thing is arm's length.

Bennett Miller's crime biopic starts off being darkly humorous before turning disturbing as the inevitable tragedy unfolds. Miller's direction, much like with Capote and Moneyball, is precise and subtle, while the performances are remarkable across the board. Carell and Tatum give performances here that rank above everything they have done previously, and Ruffalo is great as always.

The carefully observed relationship between the brothers makes this a real stand out for me. Few films delve into sibling dynamics, and I appreciate the way Miller effectively uses this relationship as a set up for du Pont to enter the narrative. The early scene of the brothers training together says much with little dialogue. The film's continual restraint allows the unease associated with the whole situation to fester, mirroring the increasingly strained relationships between the principles.

A cold and slow burn, often mesmerising but occasionally too atmosphere-driven and plot-light to support the magnificent performances on display here. The muted tone gives Foxcatcher a unique feel among true-story films of this ilk, but it doesn't always translate to a gripping experience. Definitely an achievement, and I recommend it, but it's a little too arms-length for me.

Slow burning, meandering and unpleasant parable of the american dream gone dark. Occasionally it borders on caricature, but the brilliant way it seamless switches focus between the three main characters, keeps the overall story feeling authentic.

Acting is not standing there pretending to think. We've come full circle to where I'm starting to think the hack from adaptation has a point. Carell was miserable, Ruffalo is fine, Tatum is ok. Since I live like 10 min from the location and know the actual story the liberties and skipped information ruined large portions of this as well. Psycho handled mommy issues with more tact.

A good cast, a spooky real life tale makes for a good enough film, but something is just missing from this. It's off putting and confusing, which is the point I am sure, but nothing grips or takes hold or really made me care about any of it.

"Foxcatcher" narrates the bankruptcy of the American 'easy success' mythology through the compelling (and quietly chilling) drama of these fractured, dependant personalities. Carell and Tatum are powerhouses (Ruffalo is good as well) and Miller abstains from pyrotechnics, going for his preferred muted approach -as a result, the film is rarely manipulative and rarely truly spectacular.

Foxcatcher is a slow-paced drama based on real-life events that doesn't provide much more than surface-level information. It doesn't provide much time for reflection after big events, yet gives us countless scenes of people sitting around or training when we don't need that time of reflection. It has great acting and deserves accolades for that, but otherwise it's a slow, uninformative, and not all that interesting drama.

A lot more than just a sordid true crime thriller. I don't find it as emotionally distant as some do; it's actually quite a sensitive character piece, and there's a wide gamut of feeling (resentment, love, insecurity, disappointment) projected through violence, action and competition rather than through words. Carell is getting most of the attention for his quietly terrifying work but Ruffalo and Tatum are exceptional as well. Another mature film from Miller.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The acting was quite good (Tatum just gets better and better with every movie) as all the characters do a great job of being captivating despite a there being nearly more silence or quiet mumbles than dialogues. Slow, cold, and quiet, but all the better for it. I normally hate movies like that but here the acting is on full display and Tatum, Ruffalo, and Carell deliver ten fold. Its a subtle movie with great character development. The use of sound and dynamics creates such unbelievable mood and tension. This is one film you don't want to go to the bathroom during. A really interesting movie, sporting some incredibly bold moves. The acting is out of thid world as Carell, Tatum and Ruffalo all shine. The true story of how wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) fell under the thrall of disturbed billionaire John DuPont (Steve Carell), with tragic consequences. Bleak portrait of misguided machismo, of men who think they can restore America's supposedly lost glory--and of Mark's brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo), who becomes trapped in a situation he cannot control. Bennett Miller's direction is coldly impressive, and the acting is hard to fault; only the script seems to lack a certain depth.

Steve Carell was really good. Mark Ruffalo also put in a solid, subtle performance. Channing Tatum is still an uncharismatic meathead. The role was actually quite suited to him, though. Overall, it's a good film, but not an outstanding one. Everything's fine, technically speaking, and I did like how it touched on themes about masculinity and the United States, but I'm not sure there was a enough substance to sustain the whole 2-hour runtime.

I would have rather watched someone hunt a fox on horseback than watch this film. I found this whole movie tiresome and boring. Yes, there were some good scenes of acting but past that, this was as exciting as a actual non-WWE wrestling match. Which, at least to me, isn't terribly exciting... The biggest problem I had with this though was the pure drudgery of it all, I kept waiting for something big to happen and it only came right before the credits...

STOP! Before reading this review, you have to know that I never finished this film. It has now been over two weeks since I turned it off, and it's doubtful I ever go back. Why? The film is about subtlety and repression, and this may rise to the surface in the third act, but I will never know. Regardless, Carell feels like he's playing a bad Brando, and I couldn't get past the obvious make-up on his face. Yes, this may be a superficial reason, but I demand fast, heart-pounding action, dammit!

There's something "off" about this movie. And I don't just mean Carell's strange performance (it might be a good impersonation, but I didn't find it to be good acting). The pacing never gets off the ground. It's like 2 hours of prologue and then 10 minutes of epilogue with nothing in between. definitely well-made, and quite disturbing. to be honest though, i expected a great deal more from this film. my biggest problem with it is that as a story it's not developed enough, and that's often a trap films that are based on true events fall into - the writers think they can get away with not developing the characters, not creating a story-arch, and they use the fact that it "really happened" as an excuse for not doing their part in creating the inner logic/relationships of their world.

Viewed December 16, 2014. Well-shot but empty. It mistakes silence for tension and music for emotion, but it all comes off as incredibly flat and none of these performances live up to either the hype surrounding them. Carell does come off best, if only because he's the only one out of his comfort zone, and I think his background in comedy allows him to play up the dark humor of John duPont while still nailing his more sinister qualities.

Foxcatcher is a movie that uses silence to such a great effect, everything could probably be understood if nothing was said at all. There's a hypnotic quality to all movement in this film -- the wrestling itself is like a ballet, and even just the gaits of the three leads resemble something unwieldy. A common criticism of this, I'm sure, is that it's slow -- and it is slow -- but so expertly so as to render everything within it completely entrancing. Carell and the sound designer are the MVPs.

I loved the part of the score that played, among other instances, when Mark was driving to Du Pont's estate, leaving his old life behind. It featured this compelling dichotomy between patriotism and a kind of uneasiness, certainly the overall tone of the picture, which reminds me of the music from Pakula's 70s thrillers; America is glorious but something's off about the way we're expressing it. Body language is a highlight. Tatum, Carell, and Ruffalo were all just incredible in this.

The fact that the real Mark Schultz has completely retconned his opinion of the movie, doesn't change mine. The moments of captivating intensity are possibly spaced too far apart even for my taste (though I have no problem with slow movies), but for a movie that rides its performances so hard, it boasts some truly great ones, whether true-to-life or not. Tatum is severely underrated here while Ruffalo & Carell get most of the fanfare. Justifiably so, as both are tremendous. It's worth the watch.

Carell is a fascination in this film. All the makeup in the world wouldn't have mattered if his performance hadn't shone through. He is a presence in this movie, but that at times actually works to its detriment. We know Du Pont is weird from his first frame, but it's not long before it's easy to draw the line to psychotic. Miller often drops sound effectively when Carell is on screen, but it also builds the climax far beyond anything it could hope to deliver. Beautiful but structurally weak.

I've never seen another movie tell stories with wrestling, but it seems so obvious now. It's probably the oldest sport in the world, besides war. You don't need to be told the rules or the goal, you just need to observe. This is my favorite kind of movie, that does nothing but show and leaves the telling to the mind of the audience. On paper this should be a fascinating story of sibling rivalry, brotherly bonds, & how the drive to better yourself can lead to corruption. But the direction is too detached & slow to offer insights or opinions on what transpired. Steve Carell is inspired--giving the creepy DuPont more humanity than the man probably deserves. Tatum is a pleasant surprise as well. Overall, this is a fine flick with strong themes of family & commitment. I just think the source material could've lead to much more.

Gloomy to morbid smart-fuzzy drama, so fuzzy it seems to imply that isolation and wealth leads to imperial creepiness, and all this equals America. There's interesting stuff here -performances, use of sound, make up-, but it's all a bit aimless and obscure. And ill-natured. Carell, very hard to get here. I like it less the more it sits with me. The performances and candid filmmaking are great. This ehness I feel must be attributed not to the script, but to the real story itself. It's strange to wonder if such a horrific circumstance was simply not psychologically complex enough to make a great movie, but that's exactly what I'm wondering. Perhaps it feels all too simplified, as if the events have been portrayed in hindsight after all actions have been successfully psychoanalyzed.

I read that neither the prosecution nor the defense tried to bring the issue of motive on the trial of DuPont, so the film does not even try to get there. Could be taken as a satire about a decaying empire whose driving force is "desire", -it's no coincidence that contemporary Hollywood is obsesses with the depiction of desire- and it also breaks the thrill and identification mechanism through that narration but again those films are being made 50 times a year since "Citizen Kane".

Disturbingly hypnotic and just outstanding acting and directing. Foxcatcher is another spectacularly realized psychological portrait from Miller; a tonal piece which uses stylization to give us access to the psyches of its characters. Here, the focus is on du Pont, so the film is appropriately shady with its repressed, obsessive energies. Of course, du Pont is also a thoroughly detestable human being so in that way the movie too is hard to truly love, as amazing as it is made.

Acting is good, script is ok, story is underwhelming and not really pleasant to watch. Characters are not fully opened except the older brother. This was a story that needed to be told or rather documented and this is done quite well.

One of those films, where I don't get what all the fuzz is about. Good acting yes, but that alone doesn't make a movie. There is basically no story to tell. At least not an interesting one. For me this was mostly dull and pointless.

Solid individual performances, but an overrated movie to say the least.

This is an absolutely beautiful movie with incredible performances from Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo, that ultimately feels a bit hollow. I don't particularly care about the subject of wrestling, so I had hoped there would be a little more to the personal relationships between the characters and their personalities, but they never really feel all that well fleshed-out in the script, despite the great performances.

I'm surprised...Channing Tatum can act. Too much makeup on Steve Carell.

A cold and unsettling true drama with a subtle approach that keeps you interested and wondering from the very beginning. Miller has done a great job on the casting, Tatum and Ruffalo is astounding but as the movie goes on it's the brave casting of Carrel as Du Pont that draws the attention. An outside character with a growing dark side, probably someone who wanted to be a leader of men but wasn't naturally and eventually it's his horrible actions that leaves you wondering why.
