Let's see...a movie about a super smart killer played by Anthony Hopkins who manipulates a young, but talented civil worker played by Matthew Mcconaughey...I mean, Ryan Gosling as Matthew Mcconaughey. Nope. Never been done before. This should be a sure hit...but only if it pays its proper respects to Rube Goldberg. Nobody makes a movie about a super smart killer played by Anthony Hopkins who manipulates a young, but talented civil worker without paying proper respects to the Rube.

Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling are both fantastic. David Strathairn even makes an impression with his limted part. The film starts out well and maintains a good thriller pace without resorting to downright sillyness... until the twist is revealed. A twist that honestly I picked up right away at the beginning of the film but thought "no, that's too cliche to use" and set aside. In the end it's a let down but the ride there is quite good. Also the soundtrack could've been more subtle.

Hopkins is dynamite, but he is woefully underused (the long stretches without his presence seem interminable). Gosling is by no means a bad or charmless actor, but his character here is lame and one-dimensional. The plot is preposterous, but I was expecting as much. For a film that hinges on trickery and battle-of-the-minds, it has few interesting cards up its sleeve.

Silly, uninspired and derivative courtroom-type thriller about a young lawyer with an old BMW and an old defendant with a new Porsche. The audience knows from the beginning that the film is junky, but as it goes along it becomes progressively less interesting. Gosling seems a bit like a young Nicolas Cage here, but without the flamboyance.

Until the last five minutes, it's an average film; a little light-weight, a little familiar, but Ryan Gosling is clearly giving his all. And then, with the revelation of a final plot development, the movie shoots itself in the foot. How did this ending, which so obviously follows the logic of the movies while completely ignoring the logic of real life, make it through the screenplay stage?

Mostly a bore. Hopkins is good but his character isn't given any depth, nor are the others for that matter. Gosling's new boss/love interest is an annoying character, and the music sucks. I'd suggest watching it if it's on TV or something.

The kind of story usually found in those interchangeable paperback thrillers that sell like gangbusters in airport gift shops. You'd need to be a little loopy from high altitudes to stomach all the mounting implausibilities and general character chicanery in Fracture. Hopkins gives a completely disinterested performance. Gosling tries to inject something a little different into his role with a thick layer of furtive self-regard. It's a nice try, but not enough to enliven this dull trudge.

A formulaic, genre screenplay given wings by a great cast including the extraordinary Anthony Hopkins (miscast only in the beginning when we are supposed to believe he is married to a woman who looks like his granddaughter) and the endlessly interesting young actor Ryan Gosling. I still don't know why there was a sexual relationship between Gosling's character and his boss or where that came from (or what happened to it at the end). Worth it for the performances

I stopped being interested by the crime well before Ryan Gosling's egotistical character started obsessing about it. I've seen Law & Order episodes pack 10 times the substance in half the time. Instead I was waiting for Gosling's character to develop. A breakdown does not mean changing into jeans and t-shirt and shoving a few items around. Unfortunately his character is completely one dimensional, the MacGuffin is a tired cliche and Hopkins has to dig into past movies to make himself lively...

There isn't a frame that isn't lacking. Hopkins plays Hannibal-lite, while Gosling bumbles around a legal mess in a real mess of a movie. By the final ten minutes, the movie strains unbearably to pull the rabbit out of the hat, and it's almost laughable. At the same time, you can't really knock these two actors simply because they're still interesting even while playing it second-rate.

I was checking in and out during my screening of this film. It barely held my interest, and I knew how it would end the entire time. I was actually hoping I was wrong. Gosling is great, but I don't know why he chose this movie. Hopkins has reached the point in his career where he can routinely phone in his performance, and people will still say he's amazing, just like Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino. This film is no exception.

Rewatched this movie 12 years after I saw it the first time. Really great acting by Hopkins and Gosling. Gosling really falls into the trap of thinking it will be a very easy case in the beginning, but then he needs to play Hopkins' game, while losing everything right until the ending. Then... he WINS :-). Cool movie about never giving up, even when you're at such a great disadvantage.

What's with all these British accents in a crime flick set in L.A.? Between Hopkins and the judge, I kept expecting to see everyone in the courtroom scenes wearing white wigs. Even so, decent enough. Hopkins is appropriately intense and creepy as his Hannibal-Lecter-lite character (it ought to be routined well enough by now), and Gosling manages to suggest his lawyer character, oxymoronically, might have soul. Saw the twist coming 45 mins before the end, but it was still fun getting there.

It is a very good movie which did not fully reach its potential in my opinion. The atmosphere and the pacing are great but it is just one twist short. It banks a bit on Hopkins' "Silence of the Lambs" credentials and an Agatha Christie-like ending does not fit very well with the rest of the movie. But all in all it is an entertaining thriller with a great soundtrack.

A pretty hollow and unlikely thriller with two magnetic leads that make it worth watching. With two lesser actors this would be a 50. The music misses the mark, in places sounding like a 90s soft porn backdrop. This is not the first time Mychael Danna has made me chuckle about the musical poverty. Quite bad sound overall actually, the boom mic sometimes seems to be a mile away making subtitles an absolute necessity. Pike doesn't get much to do other than forming a dazzling couple with Gosling.
