I really had no idea where the story was going for a long time, but the amazing visuals kept me interested. Decent watch, although let's just say it's not life changing.
Frankly, the money wasted on creating Franklyn could have best been spent to fight poverty in underdeveloped countries. I did not even watch all of it apart from the scenes with Eva Green, whose performance as a deranged, self-destructive artist was realistic and enticing, but then again you don't need to fall off a precipice to know you're going to die. This just radiates toxicity from garbage material. To be avoided.
this is a movie you have to be in the mood for..its a weird little dity..think dark city with watchmen thrown in..and a little boring and alot of confusion
Incomprehensible gibberish. There's a reason why you've never heard of this film - it must have been only by some fluke that it even got a DVD release.
A tiresome film that thinks it's a lot deeper than it really is. McMorrow seems just to be throwing things at the screen and hoping that some of it sticks.
I didn't mind the lack of clues, and the flat performances delivered by the actors fit well against the dystopian background of both Meanwhile and London. Not for everyone, but those who enjoy it, will enjoy it. Oh, and the sky is blue.
For all its twisty narrative, with multiple plots that contrast from drama to fantasy, it all ends up being a metaphor for how fate affects us all. Do we really need another of these sorts of films, or another film which wraps the viewer around with an abstract narrative structure which leads to nothing? I also object to the trite use of suicide; the plot involving Eva Green has an interesting idea, but instead of exploring it its just another character with one dimensional father issues.
Interesting idea nicely shot, but it's a bit too long and flat, and makes little sense. Felt like a mediocre follower of Watchmen to me. Nothing much to miss. A late night movie for passing time when you can't sleep. It's like a nightmare that is difficult to remember, but it's a movie that is easy to forget.
Franklyn was bold, visually appealing, and had a moving score. However, it is an unfocused narrative that ends before the pieces have all come together. Even so, the strangeness of the film is compelling, and I was happy to continue watching despite not understanding things.
Takes a lot of chances with many characters and parallel narratives. Ignore those that say all the pieces don't come together. Every character's development arcs and plotlines conclude with full explanation, you just have to work and think at it a bit. Intriguing visuals and storytelling structure. The themes are many, while exploration of each one may not be too deep. Follow this filmmaker.
Impressive film that mixes the real and the surreal in a impressive fashion. Ryan Phillippe and Eva Green are both impressive as the leads ensuring that the movie doesn't slide in quality due to acting. When it's all said and done the twist isn't particularly incredible but it's not terribly out of place and stupid either.
Good graphics, weak storyline, but strong deliveries, in a stylized unbelievable futuristic city run much like ancient Rome. It's like a French script shot by an American dude.
Very challenging story with beautiful visuals. Director created purposefully a big contrast between two worlds. Many sliding destinies and the mystery which was unfolded a bit too slow. But if you were attentive and thought it over, the plot was clear and rewarding. Pay attention on Caravaggio's painting on the wall! Deffinately an important movie maker to follow in nearest future.
I think CatrelS sums up my feelings here but I'll add a bit more. It's a pretty "out there" idea and while it doesn't always stick, it's still daring and we should appreciate movies like this. It was ambitious. The score was great, the Meanwhile City parts were better than the normal world and while some of it was wonky, it's a good flick. Flesh out the themes and characters a little more, work on the pacing a bit and it would have been a 85-90.
