easily the worst of the big 3 slasher franchises. this distinguishes itself from halloween by having a higher body count, worse acting, slightly more graphic violence, and ripping off psycho noticeably more. it's just a calculated attempt to capitalize on the 80s teen audience's taste for sleaze, and as it's been outdone 100fold since, it really holds nothing for current horror fans.

It doesn't really get interesting until the third act, and even then the killer is defeated and gets back up a few too many times to be taken seriously. The surprise ending is the best part.

How the hell did this movie become popular enough to spawn a billion sequels? It's so bland and dull and uneventful.

Not that scary. Don't know how this franchise got so big. The idea of Jason is scarier than the actual films. Just like the idea of Edgar Allan Poe is more important than his actual poetry.

awesome and atmospheric to the max

The original summer camp slaughter film. Tries to function as a mystery, but as the killer's identity is pretty obvious -- the character doesn't even appear on screen until the last 20 minutes -- that never comes off; on the other hand, Tom Savini's trend-setting gore FX and Palmer's hilariously outrageous turn make this a seminal slasher movie.

the original is not the best here imo, but it still a pretty good slasher film

Though it is better than most of the sequels, Friday the 13th is still a failed attempt at a slasher film
