While I like it and there are definitely some compelling and intense parts, and I give props to the music that is simple, yet beautiful... sometimes I just feel like the tone is all messed up. I'm all for adding conflicting tones and whatnot in movies, to make a point (see something like, a Korine film), but I don't feel like Mullan was attempting that here. So some parts don't gel well with the rest of the film, but the parts that do -- which, honestly, is most of them -- are good stuff.

While it starts off as an interesting narrative device with a few fascinating characters surrounding it, before too long it becomes a clumsy social commentary with a boy in a fridge somewhere off in the background. There's a lot of potential, but it's a shame the two halves aren't more neatly balanced.

Very effective and hard-hitting social realism. It got me really interested in director Peter Mullan, Looking forward to see his feature films.
