Merely functional, with an alarming degree of self importance (if art is outlawed, only outlaws will be kids who draw pictures of each other on walls. What?). Our heroes are the only beautiful young people in a harsh desert world, of course, and the worst actors too (yes, even the young Cotillard), not that the script gives them much. The score's terrible and the big reveals fail to mean much. Aja apparently realized after this that it's much easier to get bad movies made when they're horror.
