Gabbeh

Basically it's the cinematic manifestation of a Persian rug. It seems like Makhmalbaf was asking "if a Persian rug were a movie, what would that movie look like?". The result evokes Parajanov. It's stunningly colorful and unabashedly fabricates a new fantasy from ancient elements of indigenous culture.

Beautiful use of colors, but the poetic way the story is told didn't work for me.

Not as conceptually brilliant as A Moment of Innocence, but it's still pretty unusual, and makes up the difference in its beauty and poetry. A "gabbeh" is something like a ceremonial rug, each one unique and with a story woven into it. This film features an elderly couple washing their gabbeh, which comes to life to tell "her" story. To use the most obvious cliché, it's about the tapestry of life. The colors are bright and rich, and the scenes often form a gabbeh-like tableau themselves.

Gabbeh estreava há 25 anos no Festival de Fajr. Esteticamente impecável, tanto que nos remete à Cor da Romã do Parajanov, e devidamente narrado com uma poética tão entranhada ao cinema iraniano, é mais um momento memorável da carreira de Makhmalbaf. BlurayRip no MakingOff.
