The romance part is quite unsuccesful and the plot turns in the end, while perfectly fine, feel contrived. The heist part is great, the narration works and both leads are superb.

A good caper movie with lots of character, solid direction and a top notch cast.

The finest element is the contrast between Caine's idealized view of the heist--presented in a lengthy introductory scene--and the actual progression of the scheme. MacLaine works little wonders, transmitting her character's view of this strange situation with a curious glare and tip of her head. The script fumbles with a perfunctory romance, predicated on the perceived mandates of movie storytelling without any concern for plausibly developing the connection between the characters.
