In 1976 Burt Reynolds was in his prime. The sight of that mustache would make the ladies' panties disintegrate instantly. So it comes as no surprise that he eventually got to direct a movie too. By today's standards, the direction, the style, and the whole movie in general are about as dated as Burt's mustache, but for what it's worth, it's not exactly a terrible movie and the story as a whole is fairly decent.

Gator is a mean film making jokes out of its gay, black, and Jewish characters. Much like all moonshine films, there is the lowkey resentment towards anyone outside the south. The action set pieces are few and far between, and the ones it does have are boring. Tonally the movie is all over the place. There are wacky characters, sappy romance, and cold-blooded murder. There is a downhome sensibility the movie tries to play up like James Bond; it comes across as ignorant instead of endearing.

This movie starts off well with a couple of exciting scenes but then it quickly goes off the rails. After the first couple of scenes the film gets really boring. There are not many interesting characters in this movie. The first film in this series is a lot better, watch that one instead of this movie.
