In the beginning I thought this might quickly become a bit monotonous, but there's just so much fascinating footage. The narration is very thoughtful, and I liked all the visual metaphors complimenting it.

Taking the form of a kind of true fable, this movie does not really attempt to impart much biological information. Rather, it tries to evoke, illustrate and describe the negentropic, conservative, desirous, rapacious and mortal character of life on Earth, something it does beautifully well. This is in my opinion a great film for intelligent children interested not just in facts but also in ideas.

While the narrative is quite biased towards tying everything into a pattern and creation idea, some of the imagery was creative in themselves as composition. Most of the movie we simply watch the dazzling effect of liquid dynamics. There is a particular scene that was shining on its own; long legged spiders shot with micro-lenses on web with a violin track in the background.

A tribesman tells the tale, simply but accurately (so far as we know scientifically) of where life began and the basic truths common to all life. No real new information here. But the simple narration is filled with thought-provoking metaphors and is told over beautiful animal footage and stop action photography and dramatic sometimes-surprising music. Many interesting reptiles. Some fish. Why no mammals? Overall a nice piece to meditate over.

You'd be more entertained and better informed after watching any random wildlife program about chimpanzees or something. This was really nothing special
