The major difference in 2.0 is the un-matrix-isation of it. GITS was a green movie, in revision it is shifted to a red hue. This makes it way more colorful than intented and a bit disrespectful to Oshii. The credits Matrix copied over is completely taken out. There are some panoramic sequences of the city very similar to GITS: Innocence, they manage to fit in, but character 3D ruins it. Overall this renewal feels clumsy and makes GITS more generic than it is.
With the exception of the opening scene, the CGI is both unnecessary and underwhelming for most of the times it was used. Minor changes to some wording in the script and the fact that the Puppet Master has a female v/a (especially considering how perfectly unnerving the original male v/a was) kind of ruined the experience for this die-hard fan.
A thinking mans film, this movie is definitely one of the more important anime films in history. Every thing I said for the original version applies, except that this movie is arguably worse off because of the inconsistency of the CG compared to regular animation. And, honestly, I didn't find this an improvement because the movie already looked damn good to begin with. Because of that, I'll always recommend the original version.
