You've decided to remember Ginger Snaps for later. You can see all your remembered films here.
Summary: Is becoming a woman analogous, in some deep psychological way, to becoming a werewolf? Ginger is 16, edgy, tough, and, with her younger sister, into staging and photographing scenes of death. They've made a pact about dying together. In early October, on the night she has her first period, which is also the night of a full moon, a werewolf bites Ginger. Within a few days, some serious changes happen to her body and her temperament... (imdb)

Not a horror fan but this one manages to outdo its own genre. Instead of a mediocre werewolf flick Ginger Snaps is a darkly comedic horror flick about social outcasts finally growing up. It's blurring of Ginger's puberty and transformation into a creature of the full moon results in unexpected, but welcome, black humour. Kudos on the script which really makes this worth watch despite some spotty acting here and there. Also Mimi Rogers makes a great over-bearing but loving mother.

this is a cult classic..the acting top notch..the story was fun. This is the best Werewolf movie I seen. I love the gore, the dark humor and most of all this movie tried to make an old dog do new tricks and it did..

Really good mash-up of the comedy and horror genres. Another movie in this category, Jennifer's Body, borrowed from this pretty heavily so it kind of felt like I had seen it before. Still, if you like a good cheesy comedy/horror, this was very entertaining.

Let's get a straight reading out of this, when a girl goes into puberty disorders drugs shot through the vein are the solution? The symbolism is all over the place. Anyways, a fantastic 1st 1/3 is ruined by straightforward chase of the last 1/3.

Playfully suggesting to the audience that your horribly titled (after a cookie? really?) teenage werewolf movie is going to function as an allegory for the horrors of puberty doesn't excuse the overuse of transparent symbolism to get said allegory across. An awful Sci Fi Movie of the Week score, coupled with Sci Fi Movie of the Week acting by the majority of the cast, further sabotages an interesting concept that might have worked better had it used a bit more subtlety.

It's a very sleek film that plays off stereotypes but manages to bounce off them and stay original. It's got a bit of a nuanced quirkiness in its dark humor comedic approach that would put most hipster-brand comedies to shame. It's refreshing to see a werewolf movie where you really don't know where the plot is going. That and the menstruation-lycanthropy confusion is really clever.

Gives an interesting twist to the whole werewolf concept and delivers quite well despite the budgetary confines. It avoids the mistakes of Dog Soldiers by limiting the exposure of the prosthetics/animatronics, where extended looks would have lost all credibility. Also gives me a chuckle that hardcore gorehounds might squirm a bit at the sight of dripping menstrual blood.

The quintessential werewolf movie. Gloriously low budget and thoroughly entertaining. Isabelle and Perkins have amazing chemistry and tie the whole film together so well. The metaphor for menstrual anxiety is extremely well done.

Top badass moment? Ginger beating the crap out of Trina Sinclair during the hockey game, for giving her sister Brigitte a hard time. The air-headed bitch deserved it! Sticking up for your family is badass. The games teacher was pathetic though; she appeared to have no idea that Brigitte was being picked on; a shocking indictment of teaching standards in Canadian schools in the 21st Century. 0 cats and 0 decapitations.

Most werewolf movies involve a male main character turning into a werewolf, endangering the life of a woman he loves. "Ginger Snaps" is a wholly female werewolf movie, making lycanthropy (the werewolf disease) a metaphor for menstruation, puberty, and sexual awakening. It is very clever and, also, has some good scares. The two main characters are sisters and share a wonderful bond, mostly thanks to the acting of Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle.

After an opening that is in danger of becoming a clichéd 'goth' horror film from the 90s, it was a delight to revisit this, after my adolescent years, and find that its an underrated gem, a comedy horror which has an emotional core and can be legitimately called a feminist work, exploring issues of female puberty through werewolf mythology. Its sad to see that its been largely forgotten because it is far more interesting than most horror films and by the end legitimately pulse racing.

I REALLY couldn't get into this film. The plot is predictable and dull, none of the characters have any depth or dimension, and the effects & cutting are downright lazy. There are a few moments where the film manages to produce some genuine tension, but to be honest if thats what you're looking for you'd be better off watching a paranormal activity film. Not funny either. The most important point: why would you need to analogize periods with werewolfs? Periods are much scarier...

Like a cross between Carrie and An American Werewolf in London. It's a little cheesy at times, and the special effects are not that great, but it manages to convey the horror of being an awkward teenage outcast quite well (especially with the character of Ginger's younger sister, excellently played by Emily Perkins). Some funny dialogue, and a surprisingly moving ending.

Pretty damn good different take on the werewolf myth, but it falls apart a bit towards the end. Hold back on the (not very good) special effects and cut it by 10 minutes and it would have been one of the best of its kind since An American Werewolf In London, but as it is it's%u2026 still pretty good for a genre that's been begging to be put out of its misery since, well, An American Werewolf In London.)
