Cheesy and really trashy but I couldn't stop smiling yet so terrible. No one can play black people like Cuba Gooding Jr. Man that guy is good at playing black guys. The fight at the end is great.

I hate it when films inject a melodramatic, nauseating story-line for why good kids turn to prize-fighting, whether it's saving a father's life, or getting out of ghetto. What's wrong with enjoying combat and wanting to become a great fighter, like most boys do? And while there is plenty of boxing action, a positive, it's low-quality. The climactic scene features a 50+ year-old man beating up our 20-something protagonist by taking dozens of bare-knuckle punches to his temple. Swear to God

Better than the other Gladiator.

Pretty much no one has heard of this movie, and the release and success of Russell Crowe's "Gladiator" hasn't helped. Anyway, I saw this movie when I was 12 or so, and that added a lot to my enjoyment. It's a decent movie with some cool/unrealistic fight scenes. Of course Cuba went on to be very successful, but I'm surprised the white guy wasn't able to get his career going as a generic action guy.

Overall, not bad, but the end was mind-numbingly stupid and predictable.

Pretty entertaining and amusing for a trashy boxing movie. Yeah, the plot is cliched, the romance is pointless, but the characters are quite enjoyable. Gooding Jr, Seda, Davis and Dennehy all have their moments, in contrast to the wooden brooding Marshall. Also introduced me to the perplexing phrase 'catch you on the greasy side'.
