Summary: In GLOBAL METAL, directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn set out to discover how the West's most maligned musical genre - heavy metal - has impacted the world's cultures beyond Europe and North America. The film follows metal fan and anthropologist Sam Dunn on a whirlwind journey through Asia, South America and the Middle East as he explores the underbelly of the world's emerging extreme music scenes; from Indonesian death metal to Chinese black metal to Iranian thrash metal. Infinitely more interesting than A Headbanger's Journey. Will have to watch it again to properly assess it, as it's been a while, but I remember thinking that it felt like something was missing.
Fascinating look at some of the most obscure countries where metal is being made, as well as some of the biggest where metal is practically a way of life at times. Intriguing and clearly crafted by someone who loves the genre.
Better than his first but still doesn't reach the level of awesomeness this kind of subject deserves. It's interesting to see the different political climates and how metal comes into the picture. It could have gone a lot deeper with even another half hour but whatever, as it is, this is a good metal docu from someone who loves metal.
