There are a lot of things I like about this movie and a lot of things I don't. The music is really invasive and manipulative. I can tell when there is an emotional moment, I don't need an orchestra to tell me so. Broderick was good, but felt a bit out of place. I couldn't stop thinking about Ferris Bueller. Denzel got a well deserved Oscar for this and the fight scenes are very well done. The whipping scene alone is enough to make me recommend this.

It's hard to find a movie these days in which Denzel Washington does not play a lawyer, detective, or department of transportation worker. It's even harder to find a movie in which he tosses aside his universal likability and plays a complete and utter dick-wad. It is impossible, however, to find a movie in which Morgan Freeman doesn't play Morgan Freeman. Hey. You can't have it all.

Hmm... am I the only one who found this movie really quite cheesy at times? Maybe it's because I'm European, but despite the racial issue being an interesting theme, this movie really didn't move me like Band of Brothers does for example. Good performances from Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman by the way.

Glory tells a story that is filled with Strength, courage and determination. A film that relies on mostly Washington and Freeman to help display the films ultimate message. Both of these actors were stellar and their performances were genuine and heart wrenching especially Washington. It was sad to see this men looked down upon, but a story that lets us know that we can achieve just about anything if we are willing to believe in the cause and fight for what is right

I'm a sucker for Edward Zwick's epic stylings, and although some of the racial conflict has dated itself and become overly black-and-white (ha!) over the last two decades, the connections between the characters and the war scenes work. It's certainly my favorite Civil War movie.

It's strange that a movie with Broderick, Freeman, and Washington (among others) doesn't get talked about more often, especially since this is a good movie. I felt like Broderick was miscast, but otherwise, this was solid. The battle scenes are awesome and a lot of this movie is extremely well-shot. Denzel and Morgan Freeman have great chemistry and their scenes are the most enjoyable in the movie.

Even though it is sometimes heavy handed (hey its a heavy handed subject) the film succeeds in entertaining as well as shining a light on an oft overlooked part of history. It is a bit of the "Hollywood treatment" but the amazing cast ties everything together. Zwick is solid as usual.

This was the first war film I ever saw. It frightened me. I loved how this film depicted battle, and the particular element of pairing these men who arguably couldn't have come from wider differences, yet join together for a cause, and share their last breath with indeed such glory and fearlessness. It was very touching, and frightening.

The only Edward Zwick film that works because the historical facts are accurate enough and well depicted. The drama also doesn't seem ham fisted like his other pics. Even the usual insulting "white man leads minorities to victory" angle that Zwick likes to use in his movies was factual this time and necessary to show the obvious inequality during the civil war. The acting is all around solid and the story is heart wrenching stuff.

I haven't seen any interesting Civil War films until I saw Edward Zwick's '89 war drama. This film had a good cast, especially actors at a young age before where they are now. The film presented real and detailed scenes of how black soldiers in the 19th century trained and fought for their freedom. What interested me the most was in the scene where Denzel Washington's character asking his colonel "will we be free after the war". The movie was gripping, powerful, and overall great.

Well crafted war movie is (mostly) superbly performed and tightly directed -- though viewing the story entirely through the eyes of a white man is an unnecessary (and vaguely condescending) conceit, which leaves the film with an uncertain and uncomfortable aftertaste (not helped by Broderick's rather bland performance). Both Freeman and Washington are sterling, and it is nice to see Elwes in a completely heroic role for a change!

The movie can be utterly hilarious at times due to how ham-fisted the editing and music choices are. However, the film is at its best when when it's about the camaraderie between the soldiers and how they deal with racial discrimination. This is especially elevated by Washington's performance. On the other hand, Shaw was overly muted on racial issues for someone who was historically an ardent abolitionist, but his commentary on the white-black dichotomy in the military was appreciated.

While well made and performed admirably by the main cast Glory falls victim to the Hollywood stereotype of requiring a white man to be the lens through which we experience an event that would be more involving and even more interesting if told from the point of view of a black soldier.

An emotionally overwhelming epic about one of the first African-American units during the Civil War. It's a celebration of the story about heart and courage but also acknowledges the sorrow. Superb acting throughout, and some wonderful, memorable moments such as the camp fire and whipping scenes, elevate this film from the morass of "Black White interaction" movies, most of which seem unable to tell a story without one side or the other being depicted as the "bad guys". I would have enjoyed hearing more about the motivations of the black recruits in order to understand both their loyalty and determination, but it didnt detract too much from a truly memorable film.

Though there is more that could be derived from this story were it not told from the perspective of a white man, 'Glory' is nonetheless a reverential movie. More often than not, knows when to take the spotlight off of its white leads. Though Broderick feels misplaced, the cast is otherwise top notch, and the action and production value, impressive.

Glory is one of the movies that never fails to get an emotional reaction. It's a brutal and inspiring look at the Civil War and the racial tensions that surrounded the first all-black volunteer company. It does add a bit of drama in to make things more entertaining but does try to largely stay true to history. There are also some heavy-handed moments in trying to influence the emotions of the audience, but really with a movie this good those complaints mean very little.

Apart from Broderick being out of his depth most of the time, and the unnecessary overly dramatic and loud epic music, a well made war movie on a good subject matter. This is the kind of film that the adjective "handsome" was invented for. It's beautifully shot by the great Freddie Francis and there are wonderful break-out performances from Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. It's also a very middlebrow movie treatment of the material that doesn't really deal with it in any depth. It establishes about 3/4 of the way through that when put to the test, these men not at all surprisingly proved that they could be an asset in combat.

Broderick seems to seesaw between feeling totally miscast and settling well-ish into his role; Glory also treads a little too close to Hollywood with some of its dialogue, but for the most part, it's a solid and moving historical drama with great cinematography and epic bookend battle sequences.

A workmanlike effort whose attempts to centre its main character come at the cost of rather scandalous historical inaccuracies. Why is Frederick Douglass a borderline silent role when his sons actually fought with the 54th at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner? Why on earth would you portray the virulently abolitionist jayhawker and onetime John Brown acolyte James Montgomery as not only a racist, but a former slave owner? Shaw's story hardly needed embellishment.

This would probably be a 6 part miniseries if it came out today. It suffers a little from its brevity (lots of underserved subplots.) I can't fully decide whether casting one of the least authoritative actors (Broderick) in the commanding role is a bug or a feature. In the end though, it moves briskly, the battles read well and most of the important players give strong performances.
