I mean, you can only take a modern re-telling of Romeo & Juliet from the perspective of gnomes so seriously, and suspend your disbelief to such a degree before you just can't be bothered anymore. It's not a bad movie by any means, it's a cute kids/family movie and on that level it does what it sets out to do. I do certainly recommend seeing it if you have kids or are in the mood for something cute. Maybe being forced to watch it over and over at work ruined it for me. You can probably skip it.

a sad kids variation on a tired story that english professors feign appreciation for because it's apparently a classic. i've always had a strong distaste for shakespeare, but at least this movie proves the point that if you throw some gnomes into the mix then there'll be no suicides on the part of the characters or the audience. oh, and why was there so much elton john in the soundtrack?

Pretty frigging forgettable. Inspiration began and ended when somebody had the idea of redubbing Romeo Gnomeo and mounting a lawn decoration redo of "Romeo and Juliet." Slow, obvious, and generally bereft of any of the zest or inspiration that buoys "Rango" and most of the Pixar flicks. There are a few chuckle-worthy sight gags to keep hardcore Shakespeare buffs watching, and there's a (fairly unfunny) cameo by Patrick Stewart as a Shakespeare statue. There ain't much else, though.

Didn't even crack a smile once. This has none of the wit or charm of a Pixar movie (or even a Dreamworks film). The characters are forgettable, the script is a designed-by-committee ream of boringness and the soundtrack is a horrible collection of jarring Elton John songs that don't fit the movie. The CGI is technically on par with Pixar circa 1998 but with none of the charm. I gave up once the writers accused Shakespeare of not being able to write a decent drama and that their story was better.

A very cheesy rendition that was trying relaying Romeo and Juliet to children. It's not menant to be 'deep', but still somehow managed to be funny as well.

The 3D didn't add anything and wasn't really needed, However this was still a colourful, amusing family film for half term.

A fairly charming film, which I would only recommend on the grounds that Rango probably isn't appropriate for the youngest kids. The animation is forgettable beyond the fairly impressive character design/texturing, the 3D is a sideline and the Elton John tracks (mostly) a distraction. Lest the English voice cast is absolutely superb (I had the misfortune of seeing the Norwegian, and am trying to judge it not too harshly for it) this isn't all that worth your time.

There's a special circle of hell for any animated film that uses the rose petal scene from American Beauty for cheap laughs. It's called obscurity.

Utterly pointless Romeo & Juliet 'reworking' that's guilty of pretty much every crime lazy animations commit these days. CGI: passable but below average; Elton John soundtrack: ill-fitting and intrusive; voice talent: lifeless (especially Blunt & McAvoy). But by far the most unforgivable offence (for a British production) is the terrible, terrible humour displayed in the writing: Sub-par Shrek gags aplenty appear to aim this at younger children, yet still includes too many adult references.

This is one of those movies where I feel very out of synch with the rest of society, who apparently did not care for it nearly as much as I did. Besides the Elton John soundtrack seeming very out of place, I quite enjoyed this animation. The story was not a deep remake of Romeo and Juliet by any means, it was barely touched upon. But the animations and the creativity of the writers were superb.

"The film's adherence to irony becomes tedious, especially with the supporting characters planting more adult references in almost every conversation." - Glenn Heath Jr.
