Summary: A new priest shows up at the parish of a crusty old priest named Father Fitzgibbon. The new man, Father O'Malley, must ingratiate himself with both the old man and his congregation. There are various ups and downs in their relationship but on the whole, it all seems to be going rather well. Then one night, the church burns to the ground. (imdb)

"You throw like an atheist," that's when I should have known I was in for a garbage film. To be fair, while it doesn't hide its religiousness, it's not that preachy but it's so ridiculously dated and corny that it gets grating. This stands out more due to the fact that its central themes are about moving with the times and the contrast between the young "progressive" O'Malley and set in his ways Fitzgibbon. They all look out of step now. And while Crosby is charming Fitzgerald is annoying.

one of the less interesting of mccarey's movies, nobody stands out and it's all a bit lackluster. i can appreciate the broad strokes of the story, but it's pieced together in a mostly boring manner.

I liked Bing Crosby. He seems like a nice guy. And he can sing. I don't, however, like musicals and I don't like sentimentality. Even looking beyond those elements, the story of clashing approaches could have been handled with more finesse and accentuation. Perfectly harmless and watchable... and, ehm, that's it.

Not my favorite Bing Crosby movie, but charming none the less. I was put off a bit by some of the actors, most notably the kids, but it seems over acting was the way you did it then.

For Catholics only. I find Barry Fitzgerald's performance more irritating every time I see it.
