Summary: The rise of national socialism in Germany should not be regarded as a conspiracy of madmen. Millions of "good" people found themselves in a society spiralling into terrible chaos. A film about then, which illuminates the terrors of now
Fails to deliver the message or interest the audiences. The only reason I watched it is Viggo Mortensen, as I find him an interesting actor, and in the end, it proves to be the only good reason to see it. Departures into Viggo's imagination are one big thing that bothered me, woman characters that add very little to the story (desire to give blowjob to a man in Nazi uniform seems important) is another.
"Amid sketchy, historical reenactment sets and soapy British accents in place of German (Valkyrie was more realistic), Mortensen's underplayed, neutral performance stands in dignified contrast to a film that crumbles around him."
(TIFF 08') One of the few times where I fell asleep, maybe I was tired, but I blame the film. I woke up before the ending, which was one of the worst I'd seen (at least from my point of view, having been raised in a jewish household)...
Flick without any pacing, bad story and nothing to offer for viewer. I appreciate Viggo's need to explore totally different kind of characters, but sorry this was not his field. And director was weak.
It drags on and feels as if really never gets properly involved with the subject itself. The movie dances around the difficult things and just when something seems to happen, it already ends.
very slow start, boring at times, but last third was great. It shows pretty well how ordinary people can get caught up in the nazi madness. However, I don't think it excuses these people, because while making it understandable, the film shows a dozen chances where the protagonist should have acted and shown some backbone.
