GOODBYE, COLUMBUS is one of those light slice-of-life comedy-dramas that come out, garner some good notices (and, like this film, the occasional Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay)--and then vanish into obscurity. It's got its moments: solid acting, a colorful wedding scene, a few good comic bits here and there, a nice 60s pop soundtrack...but it doesn't add up to much. It could've been a solid little character piece, but it's all a little too pleasant, and the abrupt ending is unsatisfying.

Awfully sit-commy. Benjamin wears the same slightly bemused smirk throughout. And Klugman does the usual Klugman (Jack, not Neil). Not terribly much like the book--even though it takes pains to include all the plot points. Lame title song by the Association--although the "Real" thing was alright (just seemed tacked-on to the movie though). Like they were trying to create another Graduate (sort of)--and whiffed.
