The usual Lloyd C. Douglas mix of romantic sentiment, self-sacrifice and pop mysticism, directed with subtlety and complete conviction by Frank Borzage. Flynn carries himself with a self-deprecatory gallantry that tempers his character's nobility, making him a more likable Douglas hero than the brittle Robert Taylor or the brooding Rock Hudson. I just wish he could have lent a little of his humility and humor to Hardwicke, whose solemnly oppressive goodness comes close to ruining the movie.
