Gypsy

Unusual musical (little romantic element) based on a mother-daughter relationship: Russell works hard to give Mama Rose complexity, and Wood tries her best in a difficult (and perhaps underwritten) role requiring a very big transition. The music and lyrics are strong, and Paul Wallace gives a fine performance in "All I Need is the Girl". The presentation of the theatrical milieu and the decline and death of vaudeville is precisely observed (within the studio setting), and the finale is touching.

Not as good as the Bette Midler version, but definitely worth the watch.

Rosalind Russell wasn't much of a singer--rather a problem for a Mama Rose. And she's a tad too lovable to make her characterization believable--there needs to be a sort of ferociousness that she lacks. But this a decent effort at capturing a flawed musical. If only the quality of the dialogue came anywhere near the great Stephen Sondheim lyrics...

Under its glitz and chipper attitude, Gypsy is a very dark story about an abusive mother who pushes her daughter into showbiz and then stripping once the once runs out.
