There is a shard of merit in this anime in that the good and evil sides are far more morally ambiguous than in most other series, but this good aspect is not enough. The biggest problems are that a) a much larger story is crammed into too short a work and b) it is merely a generic anime with giant robots and high brow pretensions despite the admirable attempts to do something interesting.
