Summary: Dan, an idealistic inner-city junior high school teacher with a drug habit, and Drey, one of his troubled students, stumble into an unexpected friendship that threatens either to undo them or to provide the vital change they both need to move forward in their lives.
Of course, incredible performance by Gosling. Great direction, emphasizes feeling and mood over narrative development, as proven by the ending. Completely works at invoking emotion, but leaves something to be desire regarding plot development.
Despite some plot inconsistency and a pace that may be a touch too slow, this film is rich is emotional subtext. Amazing performance from Gosling who portrays his character as real, battled, and emotionally inept. A solid drama film.
Understated and moving drama, with an excellent lead performance from Ryan Gosling and a natural and flowing script. Broken Social Scene help too! There's not much in the way of a plot, but this is a simple film about human flaws and relationships. Well worth your time and attention.
Excellent drama and acting. Presents dilemma of modern society student/teacher relationships especially when parenting is lacking at both ends. His junkie habits confuse the issue of twenty somethings having relationships with mature early teens. No good solutions here.
The movie's moving story and crisp direction are enough to support this film, but it ultimately wouldn't be half as good without Gosling. He gives one of the most phenomenal and honest performances that I've seen this decade. This man has a style all his own and truly needs to start being seen as a potential Marlon Brando or Paul Newman.
Pretty good drug flick. Pretty mild when it comes to showing the powers of drugs, it's nothing compared to Requiem for a Dream for example, but it shows the destruction it can cause regardless. Gosling was great as usual. Never really gave this guy a chance, glad I did.
