Summary: This anime anthology explores the origin and historical events of the Halo universe with both canon and non-canon stories, brought to life by some of Japan’s top animation directors.
Halo Legends offers a lot for anyone interested in the Halo universe, from the origin of the rings to the dissent of the Elites to the Spartan II project, and even some silly non-canon humor. It's not a spectacular achievement, and not all shorts are that good, but as a whole it's an entertaining entry and worth a fan's attention. Hopefully it draws more of a crowd towards Halo. I've always said Halo is the Star Wars of this generation; it transcends its original video game medium.
Absolute and utter swill. It packs two semi-interesting "history of the Halo universe" shorts that are actually a decent watch and after that it's utter trash. The animation is horrendous, with 3D that looks like the mid-90's, one cartoon packing a photoshop filter to make it look "artsy" and just general awfulness in terms of voice acting and competent storytelling. This is absolutely and utterly awful cinema. This is cinematic cancer and I say that as a fan of the Halo series.
Respectable effort with (mostly) good production values, but - as with all episodic, animated tie-ins (Animatrix, Batman - Gotham Knight & Dante's Inferno come to mind) - the quality varies on a 10 minute basis. Familiarity with the universe surrounding the halo franchise is a plus, but not a must as episodes 1 & 2 do a good enough job at introducing the basic premise (though the absurdly weak third ep. sharply cuts into that groundwork). In videogame-terms: A solid rent ("Odd one out" rocks!).
3 of the 7 shorts are good. Homecoming is the best story wise. The Duel at times is so so but the animation carries it. Odd One Out is worth checking out as it is indeed the odd one out. Its my favorite of the seven as its bizarre, funny and has dinosaurs in it. The rest are unimaginative arcs that may have the occasional interesting moment.
